At 1:48 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, the Iowa City Fire Department responded to a report of a basement fire at 2251 Russell Dr. The first unit arrived on scene 3 minutes after notification and reported a working basement fire with smoke showing from a single-family ranch style residence. All occupants had evacuated the building prior to the arrival of the fire department. The fire was contained to the basement and extinguished within 23 minutes after arrival.
The residence sustained fire damage to the basement and smoke damage throughout the building. A loss estimate is not yet available. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Department.
Off-duty Iowa City Fire Department personnel were called back to backfill stations. Outside agency support and assistance was provided by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Joint Emergency Communication Center and Mid-American Energy.
