The Iowa City Fire Department responded to the report of a building fire at 1848 Lower Muscatine Road at 4:55 a.m. on April 12. The first arriving fire company found heavy smoke coming from Laundromania and reported fire in a bank of commercial dryers at the rear of the business. Fire Department members extinguished the fire and ensured that the fire had not spread to other parts of the building.

Damage to the building was significantly diminished by a sprinkler system which suppressed the fire until fire crews arrived. Many businesses in the building sustained mild smoke damage.

Thirteen Iowa City Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and were assisted by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, MidAmerican Energy, and Iowa City Marketplace management.

Total damages are estimated to be $10,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
