The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a building fire at 325 S. Grand Avenue, Slater Residence Hall at 1:24 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. The first unit arrived on scene four minutes after receiving the alarm and reported a working fire on the 9th floor.

The occupants of the building had safely exited the structure prior to the fire department’s arrival.  Fire crews made an aggressive high-rise fire attack from the interior, containing the fire damage to a single dorm room.  The fire had activated the sprinkler system, which kept the fire in check until it was fully extinguished within six minutes of fire department's arrival.

Sixteen fire personnel responded to the initial alarm. Outside agency support and assistance was provided by University of Iowa Police, Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, and University of Iowa Facilities. Two occupants of the dorm were displaced.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.  The building sustained minimal smoke and fire damage, and moderate water damage from the sprinkler system. A loss estimate is not yet available. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Department.
