The Iowa City Fire Department is investigating a fire that occurred in a house at 321 East Benton Street.

Firefighters responded at 1:43 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017, to a report of a house on fire at the corner of Benton and Gilbert streets.

The initial arriving crew found an interior fire spreading to the exterior rear of the house. Sixteen firefighters established an aggressive fire attack and extinguished the fire in approximately 15 minutes. The fire was contained to the room of origin. Damage to the house and contents is estimated at $30,000. No injuries were reported; however, one pet dog died despite resuscitation efforts by fire personnel.

The Iowa City Fire Department was assisted by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, and MidAmerican Energy Company. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
