At 7:13 p.m., on Thursday, March 1, 2018, the Iowa City Fire Department responded to a report of an attic fire at 433 South Johnson St. The first unit arrived on scene 3 minutes after notification and reported a working fire with smoke and fire coming from the eaves of a three-story apartment building. Most occupants had evacuated the building prior to the arrival of the fire department. The fire was contained to the attic and extinguished within 50 minutes after arrival.  
The apartment building sustained significant fire damage. A loss estimate is not yet available and cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Department.
Off-duty Iowa City Fire Department personnel were called back to backfill stations and assist at the scene. Coralville, Hills, Solon and West Branch Fire Departments assisted with backfilling Iowa City stations. Other outside agency support and assistance was provided by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Red Cross and Mid-American Energy.
