This month, the Love Food, Fight Waste program is highlighting the importance of local food in our Johnson County community.

“Choosing local whenever in season and when possible, as often as possible, strengthens a community-based food system,” says Michelle Kenyon, director of Field to Family, an Iowa City-based nonprofit that works to create a healthy and sustainable local food system. “Community food systems enhance the health of our economy, environment, and our population.”

City Council approves maximum property tax levy

Iowa City Council conducted a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023, where they approved setting the maximum property tax levy for specific levies for the FY2024 budget. The signed resolution can be viewed online .

The City will be hosting and co-hosting numerous events throughout March to commemorate Women’s History Month. Mayor Bruce Teague proclaimed March 8 as International Women's Day and the month of March as Women's History Month at the Feb. 21, 2023, City Council meeting.

At 12:20 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, Iowa City police received a report of a shot fired at 118 S. Clinton St. Nearby officers were on the scene within seconds and collected a shell casing at the scene.

At this time, no injuries have been reported related to this incident. Iowa City Police are continuing to actively investigate this incident.

"It's a Matter of Pride" decals available at City Hall

The Office of Equity and Human Rights has complimentary Pride decals now available on a first-come basis. You can pick up a decal at City Hall’s front lobby information desk, 410 E. Washington St., during regular business hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Because of the limited number available, we ask that you take only one per household. The decal is reusable and waterproof, making it perfect for any home, business windows or doors and your vehicle. It’s a Matter of Pride yard signs will be available in early May.
