The City of Iowa City Human Rights Commission is seeking nominations for its Youth Human Rights Awards.

This annual event recognizes the contributions of youth who have helped to advance human rights causes locally or abroad.

Examples of award-worthy activities include, but are not limited to:

Collecting money for a Human Rights-related organization/cause Organizing a Human Rights-related activity Collecting food/clothing/personal hygiene items for local or national organizations

"It's a Matter of Pride" decals available at City Hall

The Office of Equity and Human Rights has complimentary Pride decals now available on a first-come basis. You can pick up a decal at City Hall’s front lobby information desk, 410 E. Washington St., during regular business hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Because of the limited number available, we ask that you take only one per household. The decal is reusable and waterproof, making it perfect for any home, business windows or doors and your vehicle. It’s a Matter of Pride yard signs will be available in early May.

Downtown towing begins at 2 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 for snow removal

Crews will remove snow in Downtown Iowa City overnight Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023, beginning at 2 a.m. Vehicles parked in tow-away zones will be removed.

Towing will impact Prentiss Street to Market Street, Madison Street to Gilbert Street, as well as North Clinton Street from Market Street to Church Street. The parking in these areas are metered spots, which do not permit parking from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Follow all posted parking signs to prevent your vehicle from being towed.

Vehicles can be moved to a Downtown Parking ramp, or to on-street parking spaces outside of the area....

Large winter storm brings reminder to clear sidewalks of snow

All of Iowa City is digging out from the biggest snowfall of the season. With the snow ending around 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, residents are reminded that they should clear their sidewalks of snow, slush, and ice.

We know it's a lot of snow, so take your time and stay safe! Remember, it's easier to remove snow as early as possible before it freezes solid or gets packed down by foot traffic.

Sidewalks in Iowa City must be cleared within 24 hours of a one-inch or greater snowfall, or after any accumulation of ice has ended, for sidewalks to be used safely by pedestrians...

Curbside composting collection suspended Thursday due to snowstorm

Curbside collection of composting (food and yard waste) has been suspended Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, due to the forecasted winter storm slated to hit the area.

Garbage and recycling collection to continue as scheduled.

The cancellation of curbside composting collection means crews will be able to collect higher volume curbside items like garbage and recycling quicker.

Normal curbside operations will resume Friday, Feb. 17. Please have carts to the curb by 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.

A snowstorm is slated to hit Iowa City this Thursday, Feb. 15, 2023, bringing large amounts of snow. Forecasts predict anywhere between five to nine inches of total accumulation.

The City is urging residents to park their cars off-street so plows can efficiently clear roads of snow.
