The Iowa City Animal Care & Adoption Center is housing and caring for eight dogs displaced by Hurricane Harvey.
Dogs brought in to Iowa City from Texas

These animals were living in Texas animal shelters when the hurricane hit,  and they arrived in Iowa City Thursday night.

“They were happy to stretch their legs, have a snack, and settle in for a good night sleep,” Animal Services Supervisor Liz Ford said.

The Iowa City Animal Center is asking for help as it cares for the displaced dogs.

Needs include:

  • Adult dog food, preferably Fromm brand or another high quality dry food product
  • Large martingale collars
  • Large flat collars
  • Big, tough dog toys
  • Canned pumpkin
  • Dog treats
  • Blankets and big towels

All of the dogs will receive their full vaccines, flea/worm treatments and baths. They will be given a few days to adjust before being made available for adoption.

The Animal Center would like to thank both AHeinz56 Dog Rescue and Last Hope for coordinating transportation for the dogs, as well as the Center’s Animal Response Team volunteers who stepped up during this response effort.

If you’d like to make a donation or learn more about the Texas dogs currently at the shelter, call the Iowa City Animal Center at 319-356-5295 ext. 7 or email
