The holiday season results in more trash than normal, which means more waste will be entering our landfill. The good news is that there are some easy ways to reduce holiday waste. Be part of the solution to lighten your climate footprint during this merry time by following these tips!

Green your tree

Artificial trees are reusable year after year and can make a big impact over time in reducing annual holiday waste. Or, get creative by making an upcycled “tree” with cardboard, books, wooden pallets, plastic bottles, and more.

Holiday schedule and closures for City of Iowa City

Iowa City administrative offices and other facilities will be closed Friday, Dec. 23, and Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, for the Christmas holiday, as well as Monday, Jan. 2, 2023, for the New Year's Day holiday.

Please note that trash, yard waste, and recycling will be collected on their normal days.

Human Rights Commission to host "Hot Cocoa and Coffee" event

Iowa City Human Rights Commission members will host a “Hot Cocoa and Coffee” event on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn Street, in Meeting Room D.

Participants will learn more about the Iowa City Human Rights Commission and the work commissioners are engaging in throughout the community.

The Commission invites you to warm up with a complimentary cup of hot cocoa or coffee while taking the opportunity to chat with individual commissioners.

#3- Eastside Loop detour near American Legion Road ends Dec. 12

With more portions of American Legion Road reopening, the #3 - Eastside Loop bus route will end its detours in the area on Monday, Dec. 12, 2022.

The changes are for both the AM and PM Eastside Loop. The portion of the route on Rochester Avenue will continue to detour.

Section of American Legion Road to reopen Friday, Dec. 9

Weather permitting, American Legion Road is expected to reopen from Buckingham Lane to Arlington Drive on Friday, Dec. 9, 2022. Additional portions of American Legion Road are expected to reopen in the coming weeks as weather permits.

American Legion Road from Barrington Road to Taft Avenue reopened Monday, Dec. 5.

Sidewalks on American Legion Road between Buckingham Lane and Barrington Road - including the pedestrian tunnel - are not yet completed and will remain closed through the winter months. Sidewalk grading and paving operations will resume in 2023.

Expect occasional lane closures for tree removal along Highway 6

Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures along Highway 6 beginning Dec. 12, 2022. The lane closures will only take place in the westbound lanes of Highway 6 between North Riverside Drive and Rocky Shore Drive and when weather allows.

The tree removal will occur from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. to prevent major traffic impacts. Weather permitting, the project should take about three weeks.
