“Civil Rights Movements Past and Present” will be the theme of this year’s Iowa City Area Juneteenth Celebration, scheduled Saturday, June 25, 2016. The event, which celebrates the end of slavery in 1865, will be held from noon to 6 p.m. at Mercer Park and the Mercer Park Aquatic Center, 2701 Bradford Drive. This year marks the area’s sixth annual celebration.

2016 activities will include historical displays, music and live entertainment from 1:30 to 6 p.m. by Funk Daddies and groups from the Dream Center Performance Art Academy, an award presentation from the Iowa City Human Rights Commission’s Art Contest, and a performance by the Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre. A variety of outdoor activities for kids, including a bouncy house, body painting, and games, as well as a health and resource fair that will provide information on area programs and resources for families, are also scheduled.

The event is hosted by the Johnson County Community Juneteenth Committee. Sponsors include Johnson County Social Services, Johnson County Community Partnership for Protecting Children, City of Iowa City, Waterfront Hy-Vee, Veridian Credit Union, and other local businesses, nonprofits, and organizations.
