The Office of Equity and Human Rights works to ensure fair treatment in the areas of credit, education, employment, housing, and public accommodations through enforcement of Iowa City’s Human Rights Ordinance.

In accordance with its mission, the office issues pamphlets that provide information about the laws over which it has jurisdiction. Learn from their most recent publication “Have you experienced discrimination? What can you do about it?”, which offers examples of unlawful discrimination, answers  frequently asked questions, and how to file a complaint of unlawful discrimination with the office.

The brochures are offered in Arabic, Chinese, English, African French, Spanish, and Swahili. No one should ever be discriminated against because of their age, color, creed, disability, familial status, gender identity, marital status, national origin, public assistance source of income, presence or absence of dependents, race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation. Unfortunately, however, unlawful discrimination continues to undermine efforts to achieve a more just and equitable community.

To request a copy of the brochure, email humanrights@iowa-city.org. Organizations can also request copies of the brochure (maximum 25 copies per order per language) to distribute at their locations.
