Landfill will be closed Wednesday due to high winds

Due to the threat of high winds, the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center at 3900 Hebl Avenue, Iowa City, will be closed all day on Wednesday, March 16. Sustained winds of up to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are predicted, which could cause tree and other damage and create dangerous driving and travel conditions. The Landfill is expected to reopen on Thursday on its regular schedule.

The issue of growing global inequality will be the topic of a program titled "Leading the Inclusive City" scheduled at 7 p.m. next Monday, March 21, in Meeting Room A at the Iowa City Public Library, 123 Linn Street. The event is open to the public, and no admission fee will be charged.

The Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center’s "Reading Aloud" poetry group will recognize the last day of Women’s History Month by reading poems from National Book Award Finalist Patricia Smith’s Shoulda Been Jimi Savanna. New columbarium option available at Oakland Cemetery

Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department has announced that Oakland Cemetery's Cherish Columbarium, which was formerly reserved for infant cremains, is now available for general internment of cremains. The cemetery, located at 1000 Brown Street, offers two columbariums -- the Cherish and the Forestview. Oakland Cemetery is the City's publicly owned cemetery, which is overseen by the Parks and Recreation Department.

The City of Iowa City will team up with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach for Johnson County, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) later this month to host two informational meetings on the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The Iowa City Fire Department reminds residents that when you change your clocks ahead one hour this Sunday, March 13 to start Daylight Saving Time, you should also change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Maintaining fresh batteries in these systems is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce the incidence of injuries or fatalities, and the National Fire Protection Association reports that people have nearly a 50 percent better chance of surviving a fire if their home has the recommended number of working smoke alarms.

Spring officially arrives on Sunday, March 20 -- which means that spring yard work will soon follow. The City of Iowa City’s Solid Waste Division, which will resume its curbside yard waste pick-up service on Monday, March 14, offers the following reminders for handling yard waste.
