Registration underway for Great Iowa River Canoe and Kayak Race

Registration is now underway for the seventh annual Great Iowa River Canoe and Kayak Race from Iowa City to Hills, scheduled June 11. The event, which provides a recreational opportunity to help build interest in protecting and improving the river, offers race and recreational paddle divisions for canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, and youth. Company challenges are also being accepted.

Early bird registration is $30 per person through May 27, which includes an event t-shirt. Rentals of canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are also available. After May 27, the fee is higher and t-shirts may...

Road work scheduled for South Gilbert Street

Weather permitting, pavement replacement will get underway on South Gilbert Street at Napoleon Lane on Thursday morning, May 12. This work will necessitate a lane shift for both southbound and northbound vehicles, but through traffic will be maintained. It is anticipated that the work will be completed by Monday morning, May 16.

Motorists should take note of this construction and allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

Beware of phone scams demanding money, pretending to be IRS

If the IRS is calling you, chances are it’s not really the IRS, says Iowa City Crime Prevention Officer Ashten Hayes. It’s probably a scammer, trying to intimidate you into sending them money.

Police departments throughout the Midwest have been receiving calls about phone scams in which a caller pretends to be the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), telling victims that they owe thousands of dollars and that they’ll be arrested if they don’t pay right away. Victims are instructed to put the IRS “payment” on a prepaid credit card, and are warned that if they don’t, the police will be on...

Missing 10 year-old Aruni Baloci, who had been reported missing earlier today, has been found at the Mercer Aquatic Center in Iowa City. Aruni is safe and sound thanks to public response to a media release issued by the Iowa City Police Department.

On Monday, May 9, Aruni Baloci, age 10, did not arrive at Lucas Elementary School as scheduled, which prompted a search for his whereabouts.

The Iowa City Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a missing juvenile. On Monday, May 9, Aruni Baloci, age 10, did not arrive at Lucas Elementary School as scheduled.

He is a black male who is smaller in stature. He is 4'9" and weighs about 90 lbs. He was last seen wearing a red t-shirt and plaid shorts, and was carrying a brown backpack.

Summer service schedule for Iowa City Transit begins May 16

On Monday, May 16, Iowa City Transit will begin operating its summer schedule, with the following changes:

Towncrest and Oakcrest routes will provide hourly service during off-peak hours from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. During peak hours from 6 - 9 a.m. and 3:30 - 6:30 p.m., buses will run every 30 minutes. Night and weekend service for the Towncrest and Oakcrest routes will be unchanged. The free Downtown Shuttle route will temporarily cease operation for the summer. Friday, May 13 will be the last day for shuttle service until it picks up again in August.

Animal Services looking for dog involved in bite incident

Iowa City Animal Services is asking for the public’s help in locating the owner of a brown and black German Shepherd that bit a female on Friday, May 6 near the intersection of Sheridan Avenue and Roosevelt Street. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m.

According to the investigative report, the victim was walking in the area and passed a woman who was walking the dog. The dog lunged, biting the victim on the arm and ribs. The woman who was walking the dog told the victim that the dog was current on its rabies vaccination, but the Animal Services Division needs information...

Free skin cancer screenings will be offered at the Iowa City Senior Center on Saturday, May 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Screenings will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis for people of all ages. No appointments are needed.
