Celebrate Iowa City’s new artistic bike parklet with “Bike Downtown Day”

Iowa City will celebrate the installation of a new 40 space bicycle parklet with a community gathering that includes breakfast and giveaways, Friday morning.

The parklet is the first of its kind in downtown Iowa City and will go in near the corner of Washington and Dubuque Streets in the loading zone space next to US Bank.

To unveil and celebrate the new parklet, people are encouraged to bike downtown on Friday, Oct. 14 and stop by the parklet between 7:30 and 9 a.m. for complementary Molly’s Cupcakes pastries, Java House coffee and bike related giveaways. Those interested...

The City of Iowa City’s Streets Division is anticipating that leaf crews will be able to complete a route to a route and a half each day. Please be advised that once the leaf vacuum program gets underway, we will be updating the schedule daily.

Iowa City to begin its fall Leaf Vacuum Program

The Iowa City Streets Division is ready to get underway with this year's curbside leaf vacuum service, beginning Monday, Oct. 17, 2016.

Printed maps identifying leaf removal zones are available in City utility bills and also at City Hall, the Public Library, Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, the Senior Center, and the Streets Division office at 3800 Napoleon Lane. A map is also available online at www.icgov.org/leafvacuum .

People who need help raking leaves this fall are encouraged to sign-up for assistance through the Senior Center.

A group of City of Iowa City employees will rake leaves for folks living in the City limits as part of a volunteer service day on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. The program is designed to help residents unable to rake themselves and who need extra help.

To sign-up, contact the Senior Center at 319-356-5220, Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline to sign-up is Friday, Oct. 28.

Trail access to close for repairs on Wednesday

The Sycamore Greenway Trail access from Lakeside Drive and trail access around the Thornberry Dog Park will be closed beginning Wednesday, Oct. 5, weather permitting.

These closures are needed to complete trail repairs in these areas. Normal trail access should resume by the end of the day Thursday, Oct. 6.

Crews to paint dedicated bike lanes on Sycamore Street

Crews will begin work on a pavement marking project that includes creating dedicated bike lanes on both sides of Sycamore Street.

The work is set to begin the week of Oct. 10, 2016, weather permitting and is expected to last roughly two weeks.

The project will narrow the two-way, left turn lane as well as the northbound and southbound lanes to make way for a 5 ft. dedicated bike lane on both sides of the street. The bike lanes will stretch from the City limits to Highway 6 on Sycamore Street.
