City announces social distanced meet and greet for Police Chief candidates

A socially distanced meet and greet for the three Police Chief finalists has been set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 24, 2020, on the lawn of Mercer Park between the gym and the playground.

Face coverings and social distancing will be required to participate in this event due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the City's face covering ordinance. The City will provide masks at no charge to participants who do not have one.

The event will feature circles painted on the lawn so individuals or groups of no larger than 4 people can participate and maintain social distancing....

ICPL Bookmobile Tech Zone Continues Through August 20

The Department of Human Services is offering help to households currently receiving food assistance who need to replace food that was destroyed as a result of the storm on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020. There is limited time in which to apply for this aid; 10 days from the date food spoiled.

To assist our community, we are sending the Bookmobile out for the next few days to provide access to the internet and technical tools to fill out the "Request for Replacement of Spoiled Food" form required to begin the reimbursement process.

The devastating storm that hit the Iowa City area on Monday left hundreds of downed trees, limbs, and wood debris in its wake. City crews, along with the help of the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Johnson County Secondary Roads Department, are working throughout our community to clear streets and remove debris from the City right-of-way. Due to the amount of damage, it may be some time before crews make it to your neighborhood.

City offering free paper yard waste bags at 10 City park, trail locations

The City is offering paper yard waste bags at multiple locations around the community at no cost to assist with post-storm cleanup.

Bags are in bundles of five; please limit to one bundle per household to ensure more community members have access to bags. Bags will be available on Friday morning, while supplies last, at the following locations:

Dodge Street reopens to traffic following Monday’s storm

Dodge Street from Burlington to Bowery streets has reopened after crews were able to clear downed power lines and trees caused by the Aug. 10 storm.

As of now, the major road that remains closed is Muscatine Avenue between Dearborn Street and Seventh Avenue. Some side streets also remain closed.

Some areas may take days to clear due to the large amount of damage, with multiple trees being caught in power lines. The City is not able to clear them until MidAmerican Energy can ensure that the area is safe for cleanup crews.

Iowa City Public Library Bookmobile to go out as Tech Zone

In response to storm damage to local utilities, the Iowa City Public Library is sending out the Bookmobile to act as a pop up Tech Zone.

Friday, August 14, 2020, the Bookmobile will be at Mercer Park at 2701 Bradford Dr. from 12-2 PM and then the Waterfront Hyvee at 1720 Waterfront Dr. from 2:30-4 PM Saturday, August 15, the Bookmobile will be at the Green State Community Credit Union at 825 Mormon Trek from 10 AM-1 PM

At these stops, there will be charging stations, free WiFi, as well as some laptops available to help fill out forms for storm-related relief. No Library materials...

Clinton Street converts to one-way northbound Aug. 15-23 for UI student move-in

North Clinton Street will be turned to one-way traffic going north from Saturday, Aug. 15, 2020, to Sunday, Aug. 23, 2020, to allow for an elongated University of Iowa student move-in.

The move-in schedule has been expanded to allow a more socially distanced process due to the COVID-19 pandemic by having less students move in at one time.

North Clinton Street will be one-way traffic going north from Market Street to Church Street over those days. The right lane will be for through traffic, the left lane will be for move-in traffic parking.

Downtown Shuttle changes effective Monday, August 17

Iowa City Transit will make several temporary changes the Downtown Shuttle routes effective Monday, Aug. 17, 2020, to increase capacity on the high-demand south Downtown Shuttle route and promote social distancing as the University of Iowa fall session begins.
