Hours expanded for household hazardous materials drop-off at Landfill

Starting Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, the operational hours at the Landfill and Recycling Center's household hazardous materials facility will be expanded. Also, residents will no longer need to make appointments to drop-off materials.

The facility, located at 3900 Hebl Ave. SW, will now accept materials on a walk-in basis at anytime between 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Small businesses will still need appointments. Please call 319-887-6160 for more information.

Help kick off the City's annual budget process over breakfast.

Join the City Council and staff for a light breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at City Hall, 410 E. Washington St. Meet and mingle with council members over coffee, juice, and food.

The public is encouraged to stay for a budget overview provided the City Manager’s Office to learn more about this year's budget and how it impacts Iowa City.

Part of Iowa River Trail near Benton Street to close for maintenance

A part of the Iowa River Trail just north of the Benton Street Bridge, and east of Bruegger's Bagels and Jamba Juice, will be closed Monday, Dec. 30, 2019, to allow for trail maintenance.

The closure of part of the trail, and part of the conjoined Ned Ashton Park, is expected to last through Monday, weather permitting. Trees will be removed for maintenance of utilities and infrastructure.

Crews will collect natural Christmas trees at the curb on your regular collection day.

Residents who receive City of Iowa City garbage, recycling and organics (yard waste and food waste) service should place their natural trees at the curb on their regular collection day. Trees will be collected at no additional charge, and then composted at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center.

Before placing trees at the curb, be sure to:

City parks reopen to normal hours Monday following deer management operations

All City parks which were closed from 3 p.m. to dawn will be reopened to their normal hours on Monday, Dec. 23, 2019, after initial deer management operations were conducted for the last three weeks.

In order to reduce the deer population, White Buffalo, Inc. was hired to strategically and professionally carry out sharpshooting measures. A selection of parks were closed from 3 p.m. to dawn those three weeks to allow sharpshooting.

Year-end CAFR financial report now available

Iowa City's annual year-end financial report, which provides information on actual income, incurred expenses, and financial position through the end of fiscal year 2019, is now available at icgov.org/budget . Compilation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) is required by the Iowa Code.

The 150-page report will be reviewed by the City Council and submitted to the City's bond holders.

Library announces holiday hours

The Iowa City Public Library as announced its hours ahead of the holiday season.

The Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019, and will be closed the following day, Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2019.

The following week, the Library will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019, and be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020.

The Bookmobile will be on winter Service Break from Monday, Dec. 23, 2019, through Friday, Jan. 3, 2020.
