The Iowa City Police Department is seeking public comment as part of its recertification process through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).

This voluntary-based accreditation is an important process for the Iowa City Police Department, as the review helps to keep its policies current with best practices from across the United States. This will be the department’s sixth reaccreditation, with the initial award occurring in 2002, and places the department among one of only 10 law enforcement agencies in Iowa to earn the distinction. Only four percent of all law enforcement agencies in the country receive this certification.

As part of its evaluation, two assessors representing CALEA will examine the Police Department's policies and procedures, management, operations, services, and gather public input on these matters. Through this process, the commission can determine if the ICPD meets the standards required to maintain accreditation.  

How to participate

Due to the pandemic, public comment is being gathered remotely on November 16 and 17, 2020. Those interested can participate in multiple ways.

Speak to an assessor by phone on November 16 from 2-4 p.m.

Members of the community are invited to offer comments by phone to a CALEA assessor from 2-4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, 2020. During that time, interested community members should call 319-356-5277 to have their call forwarded to an assessor.

Participate in a Zoom meeting on November 16 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

A community zoom meeting will also be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, 2020. Please note that if there is a 15-minute silence between comments, the meeting will close due to lack of participation.

Once connected, you may dial *9 to “raise your hand,” letting the meeting host know you would like to speak. Providing comments in person is not an option.

Telephone and Zoom comments are limited to five minutes per person if there are others waiting to participate. Comments should address the agency's ability to comply with CALEA's standards found above.
