At 9:54 a.m. on Thursday, May 9th, 2019 the Iowa City Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 2608 Bartelt Road. A caller advised that an apartment on the ground floor was on fire.
Fire crews entered the structure and brought the fire under control within 20 minutes. During the fire attack, four occupants were rescued from a second floor window when their evacuation was cutoff by smoke and heat in the hallway.
Eighteen fire personnel responded on the initial alarm. Outside agency support and assistance was provided by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Coralville Fire Department, Johnson County Joint Communications Center, Mid-American Energy and Red Cross.
No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. The fire caused damage to the first floor of the structure and smoke damage throughout. Damage to the apartment is estimated to be $50,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by ICFD Fire Marshal Brian Greer.
