About 350 volunteers are needed for the upcoming Cyclo-Cross World Cup and corresponding Jingle Cross Festival.

One of the reasons Iowa City was chosen for the Telenet UCI Cyclo-Cross World Cup series was the overwhelming recognition of a community that wanted to see the event succeed.

Cyclo-Cross is a tough terrain, off-road cycling sport where athletes often hop on and off of their bike and carry it through the various obstacles.

The three-day cyclo-cross festival is a combination of the annual Volkswagen Jingle Cross Cyclo-Cross Festival and the Telenet UCI Cyclo-Cross World Cup series. Typically the Jingle Cross Festival takes place in late November or early December at the Johnson County Fairgrounds but with this year’s addition of the UCI World Cup Series, all events will be held September 22-25, 2016.

There are plenty of opportunities for volunteers to help while being part of an event that brings together the best cyclo-cross talent in the world.

Event Itinerary:

  • September 22 – Opening Ceremony at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area, “Iowa City Welcomes the World”.  The evening will start at 5:30 p.m. with live music by Lonesome Road, a kid’s bike ride, participating UCI World Cup team presentations, and a spectacular fireworks display.
  • September 23: Amateur races start as early as 9:00 a.m. and continue throughout the day with races under the lights and a D.J. party on Mt. Krumpit.
  • September 24: World Cup Day. The day will start with a gravel and road fondo starting and ending at the Johnson County Fairgrounds.  The day is planned with VIP zones, kids’ races, food vendors, armed forces recognition, live music by Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and the Crooked Mile along with the excitement building for the UCI World Cup races starting at 3:30 p.m.. The UCI World Cup races will be broadcasted live to Europe.
  • September 25: The amateur and UCI races resume starting at 8:00 a.m. and continuing throughout the day with the last race ending after 6:00 p.m.

All of these events require a lot of help in various capacities.

A sign-up system has been developed with job descriptions and time slots for volunteers to choose what works best with their schedule and abilities. This is also a perfect opportunity for corporate or business group volunteers.
