It will be a holiday chorus of a whole different kind when the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center hosts its annual Holiday with the Hounds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the center, located at 3910 Napoleon Lane. The event doubles as a Holiday Open House for people who are interested in adopting a pet, and a supply drive for animals housed at the center.

Visitors are encouraged to bring gifts for shelter animals, spend time with the pets, and enjoy some cookies and cocoa during the event. In addition to gifts, gift cards are always welcome, as they can be used to purchase needed items. Other items on the Animal Center's wish list include:

Dry pet foods

Animal Center pets are fed the following foods because a consistent, healthy diet lowers their stress level and improves their general wellness. Gift-givers may find these foods at local pet supply stores or veterinarians' offices:

  • NutriSource Senior Cat Weight Management, Chicken and Rice Recipe
  • NutriSource for Cats and Kittens, Chicken and Rice Recipe
  • Fromm Classic for Dogs, Chicken and Rice Formula
  • Iams for Dogs, Low Residue
  • Hills i/d Dog Food
  • OxBow rabbit food

Toys and chews

  • Cat toys (especially little mice) and cat wand toys
  • Nylabones, squeaky toys and any kind of tough toys for dogs
  • Kong toys
  • Hard fillable marrow bones
  • Soft dog treats (Wellness Brand is a favorite)
  • Chew sticks and toys for rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and rats

Other items

  • Unscented clay cat litter or unscented pine cat litter
  • Small washable cat beds
  • Small, deep crocks for water and small ceramic bowls for cat food
  • Large bath towels and small blankets

In addition to the Animal Center, collection boxes for donations to the shelter will be set up at three area businesses: Leash on Life, 432 Hwy. 1 West in Iowa City; Woofables, 100 Oakdale Boulevard #400 in Coralville; and Just Dogs Play Care, 4100 Westcor Court in Coralville.
