The City of Iowa City's Office of Equity and Human Rights is reminding community members about the dangers of hate speech, and what can be done if you experience such an act.

Hate speech is verbal or written communication expressing hatred for a particular group. It covers all forms of expression which spread, incite, promote, or justify racial hatred, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, or other forms of hatred on the basis of real or alleged membership in a group.

Speech that demeans on the basis of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, gender identity, religion, age, disability, or any other identity is hateful.
