City of Iowa City Aquatics Supervisor Matthew Eckhardt is relying on golfers to help raise funds to teach kids the fundamentals of a different sport: swimming. On Friday, Sept. 11, the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department's Aquatics Division will host its second annual Golf Fundraiser to build the swim program’s scholarship fund so that all children who want to learn to swim can do so, regardless of their family’s ability to pay for lessons.

The golf outing will be held at Pleasant Valley Golf Course, at 4390 Sand Road SE in Iowa City. Tee times start at 11 a.m. Cost to play is $60 per person or $200 per foursome. The fee includes green fees, a box lunch, and a chance to win raffles or prizes. To register to play, visit

The event is being sponsored by several local businesses, including the Watts Group, Formosa, Givanni’s, Hills Bank and Trust Company, Pool Tech, and Takanami, along with the Parks and Recreation Department and the Parks and Recreation Foundation.
