Historic homeowners in Iowa City are invited to apply for funding to rehabilitate significant exterior features of their homes.

The new Historic Preservation Fund provides grant and loan opportunities for owners to make exterior improvements, like removing synthetic siding or repairing and recreating missing historic details – all in an effort to preserve each home’s unique, historic character.

Qualifying properties must be located within Iowa City’s historic or conservation districts, or be designated as a local, historic landmark and can be owner occupied or rental properties.

Funding is available to cover up to half of the project costs, including professional architectural services, materials, skilled labor and more. Zero-interest loans are available, in addition to income qualified grants of up to $5,000 for households under 140 percent of median income.

All applications must meet Iowa City Historic Preservation Guidelines and be reviewed by historic preservation staff and/or the Historic Preservation Commission. Projects will typically involve restoration or repair of original materials.
