Free skin cancer screenings will be offered at the Iowa City Senior Center on Saturday, May 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Screenings will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis for people of all ages. No appointments are needed.
Participants should check in at room 202 on the Center's second floor. Wear short sleeves and shorts, if possible, so that sun-exposed areas of the skin can be examined by dermatologists. There will be a short form to fill out at the screening, and assistance will be available if needed. The event is sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology and the University of Iowa Dermatology Department.
According to the National Cancer Institute, the main risk factor for skin cancer is exposure to sunlight (UV radiation), but there are also other risk factors. Some of the best preventative measures are to limit time in the sun and stay away from sunlamps and tanning booths.
