Paddlers and volunteers sought to help with annual Iowa River Clean-up

Volunteers are being sought for the annual Iowa River Clean-up, in which participants in canoes and on riverbanks will haul trash out of a 9.5-mile section of the Iowa River from Iowa City to Hills. This year’s clean-up is scheduled Saturday, Sept. 12.

Volunteers who have their own canoes are invited to register and join the launch at 7:30 a.m. at Sturgis Boat Ferry, located on S. Riverside Drive just south of Hwy. 6 in Iowa City. A limited number of canoes will be available to loan to volunteers who sign up to help and request a canoe before Sept. 5.

Next Monday, Aug. 24, marks the first day of the 2015-16 school year for students of Iowa City public schools, Regina Catholic Education Center, and Willowwind School. That means that drivers will need to focus even more attention on the road to protect the safety and well-being of children on their way to and from school and school-related activities.

Participants and spectators who are planning to attend the Iowa City Alliance Super Sixes Soccer Tournament at Kickers Soccer Park this weekend are reminded to take an alternate route to the park due to construction that is underway on Sycamore Street. The soccer park will not be accessible from the Sycamore Street entrance.

Drivers are advised to reroute to the soccer park’s south entrance from Napoleon Street:

Iowa City’s final Summer of the Arts festival of the 2015 season, the Iowa Soul Festival, will bring the impassioned dance, music, food, and art of the African and African-American communities to Downtown Iowa City on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28-29. The event will kick off with the Iowa City Carnival Parade that will wind through Downtown Iowa City beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Iowa Avenue and Linn Street.

On Thursday, Aug. 13, the Iowa City Police Department swore in Daniel Falco and Kristie Davis as police officers during a ceremony at Emma J. Harvat Hall.

Officer Falco, 39, graduated from the University of Iowa in 2000. In addition, Officer Falco has an M.F.A. in Art from Northern Illinois University and an M.A. in Education from Saint Xavier University. Prior to employment with the Iowa City Police Department, Officer Falco worked as a teacher in Chicago, Ill. and Gary Ind.

The Iowa City Public Library will be present at several Iowa City School District elementary school ice cream socials from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20.

Staff members will attend the back-to-school ice cream socials at Alexander, Hills, Hoover, Horn, Lemme , Lincoln, Longfellow, Lucas, Mann, Shimek , Twain, Weber, and Grant Wood elementary schools to help students and their families apply for a Library Card. On Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 2:37a.m., the Iowa City Police Department responded to 1946 Broadway St. Apt. #E for a report of shots fired. Prior to the police arriving on scene, the caller reported the male suspect took off in an unknown direction. Officers began checking the area, but were unable to locate the suspect, who was identified by the victim and a witness as: Diamond Sincere Wilson, DOB: 05-14-87.
