We will be celebrating the #fREADdom to read and spotlight current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. Join ICPL, City of Iowa City Office of Equity & Human Rights, and the UNESCO City of Literature, as we present a fun-filled afternoon for the entire community. Live music, crafts, book readings and more will take place outside on the Ped Mall surrounding the library. Books unite us!

The Community Police Board (CPRB) will host its annual Community Forum to hear views on Iowa City Police Department policies and procedures.

The community is invited to submit questions and comments that will be used during the event.

The forum will begin at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 20, 2023 in Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn Street, Iowa City.

Police Chief Dustin Liston will also attend the forum and be available to meet and talk with participants.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to resume this week on the Rochester Avenue Reconstruction Project.

Construction crews will be on-site performing various activities, beginning with underground pipe work between Rochester Court and Windsor Drive. Traffic control will remain the same with the detour route using Ashwood Drive, Glendale Road/East Jefferson Street, and Parsons Avenue. The Montrose Avenue and Rochester Avenue intersection will be closed once again upon resuming construction.

On Sunday, October 23, 2022, at approximately 1:59 a.m., Iowa City Police responded to the H-Bar, 220 S. Van Buren St., for a report of multiple shots fired in the alley. While en route, reports came in of at least one person shot.

Officers arrived on scene and located an adult male - later identified as Waymond Thomas, 36, of Iowa City - suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Officers rendered emergency medical aid until the Johnson County Ambulance Service arrived on scene and transported Thomas to the hospital for treatment. Thomas died while at the hospital.
