The Iowa City Fire Department is investigating a fire at the University of Iowa's Bowen Science Building. 

Firefighters responded Sunday, June 11, 2017 at 5:50 p.m. to a fire alarm at the science building.

The arriving crew found a working fire in a laboratory on the second floor. Sixteen firefighters extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes. The building sprinkler system contained the fire to the room of origin. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $500,000. No one was hurt.

The Iowa City Fire Department was assisted by the Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Emergency Communications Center, University of Iowa Department of Public Safety, University of Iowa Health Protection Office, and laboratory staff.  Off duty fire personnel were called in to staff stations during the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
