On Friday, Nov. 15, 2019, the Iowa City Fire Department welcomed a new firefighter Maria Koeppel during a badge pinning ceremony.

Koeppel was born and raised in Iowa City, and returns to town after serving as a firefighter in Lee's Summit, Missouri. She officially joined the City on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, then completed a six-week recruit academy, and will now work out of Fire Station 1 in Downtown Iowa City.

She has already received several certifications, including hazmat operations, and EMT training. 

On Nov. 15, Maria officially received her badge from Fire Chief John Grier at a formal badge pinning ceremony held inside City Hall. Maria's friends and family, along with fellow firefighters, elected officials, and City staff were in attendance to celebrate the occasion and welcome her aboard.
