Mayor delays water rate increase

On Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020, the Mayor delayed the starting date for the planned water rate increase, from February 1, 2021, to July 1, 2021.

The water rate increase had originally been slated for July 1, 2020. Due to the economic hardships throughout the world brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the rate increase had been delayed by the Mayor two previous times: on May, 11, 2020, and on Sept. 11, 2020.

Iowa City Police respond to two incidents of shots fired over weekend

On Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, at approximately 3:39 a.m., Iowa City Police were in the area of 3rd Avenue and I Street, after officers received reports of a group of people arguing and yelling about a gun. While on this call, officers heard multiple shots being fired to the east, followed by 911 calls reporting the same. There were no reports of injuries, property damage, and no additional information is available at that time.

Governor makes additional funds available for COVID-19-impacted renters and homeowners

The Governor announced additional funds for the CARES Act to support Iowa renters and homeowners at-risk of eviction or foreclosure due to a COVID-19-related loss of income, on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020.

City establishes new Truth and Reconciliation Commission; appoints board

The Iowa City City Council officially established the Ad Hoc Truth and Reconciliation Commission at their September 15, 2020, formal meeting. Following an application and review process, Council announced the appointment of nine board members to serve two-year terms at their November 17, 2020 meeting.
