In honor of Juneteenth, the Office of Equity and Human Rights is hosting a two-night virtual event, June 14-15, 2022, based on "High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America," by Jessica B. Harris, recipient of the James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award.

The book was adapted into a Netflix series, "High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America," hosted by food expert Stephen Satterfield. Watch the trailer here .

Three City Councilors will hold Listening Posts at the Public Works Open House, 3810 Napoleon Lane, on Saturday, May 21, 2022.

The Listening Posts, featuring councilors Mayor ProTem Megan Alter, Mayor Bruce Teague, and Janice Weiner, will allow residents to voice their concerns on any local issue. Each councilor will be present at separate times:

Mayor ProTem Megan Alter: 9-10:30 a.m. Mayor Bruce Teague: 12:30-2 p.m. Pauline Taylor: 3:30-5 p.m.

Iowa City residents will have the opportunity to learn about the progress and recommendations of the Recreation Facilities and Programs Master Plan and to offer feedback during two open houses on Monday, May 23, 2022.

Based on input received from the master plan’s various community engagement methods, the open houses will convey recommendations from the study and share initial renderings regarding potential City Park Pool and Mercer Park Aquatic Center design.

The Iowa City Police Department will recognize both National Police Week and Peace Officer Memorial Day with a ceremony on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at City Hall, 410 E. Washington St.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund , in 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day. The calendar week in which May 15 falls is designated as National Police Week.

Iowa City Police investigate unattended death

On Sunday, May 15, 2022, the Iowa City Police Department received information about a possible deceased individual. Based on the information received, officers were able to locate the body of a deceased man inside a building in the 300 Block of S. Dubuque Street. Because no one witnessed the death, an investigation began immediately.

The deceased man has been identified as Brandon D. Patterson, 27. Based on the preliminary investigation and assistance from the Johnson County Medical Examiner, Patterson's death is not believed to be suspicious.

City Park Pool and the City's three splash pads will open to the public beginning Memorial Day weekend!

City Park Pool

City Park Pool is located outdoors on Park Road in Upper City Park on the northwest side of Iowa City. The pool is expected to open on Memorial Day weekend with three days of fun in the sun. On May 28 - 30, 2022, open swim will run from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Regular pool schedules and pricing rates are available by visiting icgov.org/Pools .

Iowa City Fire Department responds to Thursday morning fire

The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 1227 Burns Ave. at 12:58 a.m., Thursday, May 12, 2022.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 1:02 a.m. and discovered fire coming from a second floor window. The fire was brought under control by 1:13 a.m. The fire was confined to the kitchen area of the residence, but the home sustained smoke damage throughout.

Two occupants of the home were taken to an area hospital for evaluation. One pet died due to smoke inhalation and another survived.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents....
