Traffic will be dense this week as families and friends pour into Iowa City to celebrate nearly 5,000 University of Iowa graduates.

Multiple commencement ceremonies will happen at Hancher Auditorium and at Carver-Hawkeye Area, beginning Thursday, May 11 - Sunday, May 14, 2017 with one final ceremony on Friday May, 26.

Drivers should expect heavy traffic and allow extra time coming in and out of Iowa City, especially on Dubuque Street where construction is underway on the Iowa City Gateway Project. Dubuque Street is currently configured for head-to-head traffic in the northbound lanes, and the southbound lanes are closed for work. Drivers are advised to avoid Dubuque Street and use a different route if possible.

UI Public Safety will have officers stationed at busy intersections, including Hawkins Drive and Highway 6, as well as Riverside Drive and Park Road before and after events as needed.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to be patient and cautious, as well as mindful of increased pedestrian traffic during this time.
