It’s finally spring in Iowa City, so please note these important safety rules when traveling downtown,
be it on foot, on skates, on bikes or skateboards.
According to City ordinance, riding bikes, roller skates, in-line skates, skateboards or other similar
wheeled devices are not allowed on sidewalks inside the Central Downtown Business District of Iowa City, including the Pedestrian Mall.
The district is the area bordered by East Burlington Street to the south, North Capitol Street to the
west, East Jefferson Street to the north and South Gilbert Street to the East.
It is also illegal to smoke or vape within the Pedestrian Mall.
With the high number of pedestrian walking through the area regularly, these rules were established to ensure pedestrian safety.
While the fines for breaking these rules are relatively minor ($15 for a bike, $10 for other non-
Motorized vehicles), surcharges and court costs can add up to about $80 for each ticket.
