Golf outing planned to help raise funds for kids' swimming lessons

City of Iowa City Aquatics Supervisor Matthew Eckhardt is relying on golfers to help raise funds to teach kids the fundamentals of a different sport: swimming. On Friday, Sept. 11, the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department's Aquatics Division will host its second annual Golf Fundraiser to build the swim program’s scholarship fund so that all children who want to learn to swim can do so, regardless of their family’s ability to pay for lessons.

Iowa City Farmers Market schedules Taste of Market this week

Farmers Market patrons will have a chance to taste the flavors of the season with free samples of fruits, vegetables, baked goods, grilled items, and more at the annual Taste of Market scheduled Wednesday, Sept. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. The sampling fest will be held as part of the Wednesday Farmers Market at Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp, across from City Hall on Washington Street. Samples are donated by Farmers Market vendors and prepared by vendors and Farmers Market staff.

On Friday, August 28, 2015 at 3:52 a.m., the Iowa City Police Department responded to the east side of Iowa City for a report of a vehicle that was just stolen and left a residence southbound in the 200 block of Shrader Road. The Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center at 220 S. Gilbert Street will be closed next Monday, Aug. 31, for building maintenance. A device that protects water supplies from contamination will be replaced, requiring all water to the building to be shut down while the work is taking place. Paddlers and volunteers sought to help with annual Iowa River Clean-up

Volunteers are being sought for the annual Iowa River Clean-up, in which participants in canoes and on riverbanks will haul trash out of a 9.5-mile section of the Iowa River from Iowa City to Hills. This year’s clean-up is scheduled Saturday, Sept. 12.

Volunteers who have their own canoes are invited to register and join the launch at 7:30 a.m. at Sturgis Boat Ferry, located on S. Riverside Drive just south of Hwy. 6 in Iowa City. A limited number of canoes will be available to loan to volunteers who sign up to help and request a canoe before Sept. 5.
