The City of Iowa City is now accepting applications for FY16 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) projects. The City is allocating $200,000 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help meet the housing, jobs and service needs of low- to moderate-income Iowa City residents.

Tonight’s Hawkeye pep rally on Ped Mall cancelled

The Hawkeye pep rally that had been scheduled tonight (Friday, Sept. 18) at 6 p.m. on the Ped Mall has been cancelled. Organizers from the Johnson County I-Club made the decision to cancel due to a forecast of inclement weather. The Hawkeyes will face the Pittsburgh Panthers in a 7 p.m. game on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.

The Linn Street Block Party, scheduled in tandem with the last Friday Night Concert Series of the summer, will still take place on Friday, Sept. 18, but in a different venue. To keep it out of the rain that’s forecast for Friday, the event will move off the street and into the Englert Theatre at 221 E. Washington Street.

With the help of a grant from the Community Foundation of Johnson County, the Iowa City Senior Center and its intergenerational folk choir, the Family Folk Machine, have produced a music video for the song "Brown Gold" by Tom Chapin, which celebrates the wonders of composting. Iowa City is sending summer out with a bang this Friday, Sept. 18, when the last Friday Night Concert Series of the year is held in combination with a Linn Street Block Party, making for one final festive blast before the chapter is closed on the Summer of 2015.

Facility passes required to use recreational facilities and equipment

As of Sept. 1, 2015, all Robert A. Lee and Mercer Aquatic Park/ Scanlon Gym patrons will be required to scan in with a facility pass at the front desk. If you do not have a pass, customer service staff will create one free pass for you. After Oct. 1, 2015, if you do not have your pass at the time of service, you may be issued a replacement pass for the price of $2.
