Iowa City leaf vacuum program gets underway week of Oct. 19

The City of Iowa City Streets Division is finalizing preparations for this year's curbside leaf vacuum service, which gets underway Monday, Oct. 19. Weather permitting, each designated area of town will be visited by leaf vacuum crews a minimum of four times before the program ends just before Thanksgiving. Leaf vacuum instructions and printed maps that detail the dates leaf crews will be in specific neighborhoods were mailed with City utility bills in September. Street closures announced for Sunday's Run for the Schools

Thousands of runners and walkers of all ages will hit the streets of Iowa City this Sunday, Oct. 18 for the 17th annual Run for the Schools, a fundraiser that benefits the Iowa City Community School District Foundation and Regina Catholic Education Center. Several different run / walk distances -- 5K, 10K, and half-marathon, as well as Fun Runs -- are scheduled, with courses twisting their way through Iowa City streets. The Fun Run races get underway at 8 a.m., with other races set to start at 9 a.m.

The City Council has scheduled a public hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 20 to discuss the Planning and Zoning Commission’s recommended draft of the South District Plan, which will be used by City of Iowa City planners to guide future development and investment in the area. The hearing will be scheduled as part of the City Council meeting, beginning at 7 p.m. in Emma Harvat Hall in City Hall, 410 E. Washington Street.
