Bus riders who rely on Bongo (Bus on the Go) information to plan their local trips, may notice minor disruptions to service over the next week while changes are being made to the technology beginning Friday, March 31, 2017. Customers should note that there will be no change to the website or app’s look and function. Modifications will impact internal operations only. These changes will impact City of Iowa City, City of Coralville, and University of Iowa CAMBUS customers.

Kimball Road to close for Gateway Project work

Kimball Road will temporarily close for water main work that will allow for water service to continue throughout the duration of the Iowa City Gateway Project.

The road will close to traffic east of the Gilbert Street intersection beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 31, 2017 and will be back-filled, re-paved and reopened by 7 a.m. on Monday, April 3. Drivers will need to take a different route during this time.

In partnership with Field to Family and Backyard Abundance, Iowa City Parks and Recreation will host a school garden workshop, “Teaching the Next Generation: The Garden as Your Classroom” on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 1-4 p.m. at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center Outdoor Classroom, 220 S. Gilbert St. This class is open to teachers, school district staff, early care and education providers, garden volunteers and all who are interested in using gardening as an education tool in Johnson and neighboring counties.

Work resumes to complete Washington Streetscape Project

Crews will begin work to put the finishing touches on the Washington Streetscape Project, beginning Monday, April 3, 2017.

The bulk of the remaining work will take place at the intersection of Washington and Linn Streets. To accommodate the work, Linn Street will be reduced to allow only one lane of north-bound traffic between Iowa Avenue and College Street. Crews will finish street and sidewalk paving, as well as the remaining electrical work within the 200 block of Washington Street. Other project work will not impact traffic along Washington Street.

Spring fire hydrant flushing gets underway April 3

The City of Iowa City will begin opening and flushing water hydrants on Monday, April 3, 2017.

Hydrants are flushed to remove sediment and clean out pipes. Crews will also check for repairs and for adequate water pressure needed by the Fire Department during emergencies.

Flushing will happen between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday - Friday. Schedules will be posted as an alert to the homepage of icgov.org and on icgov.org/water. Messages will also be posted...

Police Chief Jody Matherly issued awards to two officers and a civilian employee during a ceremony held Monday, March 29, 2017 at City Hall. The ICPD presents three awards annually to recognize employees for their accomplishments during the previous year.

For 2016, Officer Andrew McKnight received the Dick Lee Award, Administrative Coordinator Jenn Dahm received the Civilian Employee of the Year Award, and Officer Dennis Kelly was named Officer of the Year.

Statewide tornado drill to happen during Severe Weather Awareness Week

Severe Weather Awareness Week is March 27- 31, 2017.

The National Weather Service will conduct a Statewide Tornado Drill during the week, on Wednesday, March 29, between 10 and 11 a.m.

The purpose of this drill is to ensure that Iowans can adequately receive a Tornado Warning and can practice any actions that would be taken in the event of a real tornado. The test watch and warning will be sent through all communication channels normally used for severe weather dissemination.

The inbound and outbound Lakeside, inbound and outbound Mall and the inbound Night Broadway routes will detour beginning Wednesday, March 31, 2017 for sewer work on Court Street.

The inbound Lakeside, inbound Mall and inbound Night Broadway routes will detour using Court Street to Dubuque Street. The inbound bus stop located at the Court Street Transportation Center (stop 7004) will not be serviced. Customers will need to catch their inbound buses at the intersection of Court Street and Dubuque Street (stop 7003) while the detour is in effect.

Volunteers needed for April water clean-ups

Volunteers are needed from noon to 3 p.m., Sunday, April 2, 9, 23 and 30, 2017 to help remove trash, invasive species and woody debris from Ralston Creek and the Iowa River. These efforts help reduce flooding and erosion, while also improving water quality.

Update 04/07/2017: Katherine "Katie" JoAnne Brooker , 37 years old, is still missing. Over the course of the investigation, the few leads presented on the potential location of Brooker have been investigated and thus far have been unfounded. The Iowa City Police Department continues to search for Brooker and the case is still being treated as a missing person with no foul play suspected.
