Since the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, protesters have taken to the streets in and around Iowa City. The protests have been wide-ranging and well attended.

The City of Iowa City supports the fundamental rights of protesters to assemble and express themselves. Without the benefit of advance notice or communication from protesters, Iowa City has sought to protect the protesters by closing streets, redirecting traffic, and directing Iowa City Police Department officers to provide public safety support from a distance.

Animal Services seeks assistance identifying dog’s owner following bite

On Wednesday, June 3, 2020, Iowa City Animal Services received notification of a person who was bitten by a dog.

According to the information provided, the bite occurred around 3:30-4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2020, near the 400 block of North Van Buren Street. The victim was bitten while trying to loosen the dog's collar. The dog is described as large German Shepherd named Kiru. The dog was tied to a resident's porch.

Burlington Street reopens to traffic Friday, June 5

Burlington Street will reopen to east and west-moving traffic, with reduced lanes, on Friday, June 5, 2020.

Both lanes of traffic will be reduced to the southernmost lanes between Capitol Street to Front Street. This lane reduction allows for work around the railroad crossing that will last approximately four weeks, until Thursday, July 2, 2020.

Governor announces Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Program details for those with COVID-19 related lost wages

The Governor announced on Friday, May 29, 2020 new details on how the State will help fund rent or mortgage costs for Iowans who have lost wages due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Program will help renters and home owners who have lost wages by:

Providing up to four months of assistance. The program can provide up to $3,200 for renters, and $3,000 for home owners.

The Governor has ordered that outdoor performance venues, bowling alleys, and more may reopen, with restrictions, in Iowa City and Johnson County starting Monday, June 1, 2020. The latest order also allows for recreational, leisure, and sporting gatherings and events of more than 10 people if public health measures are implemented.

Businesses and facilities are required to follow specific guidelines in order to reopen.

North Dodge route to detour due to closure of Rochester Avenue effective Monday, June 1

The North Dodge bus route will detour due to the closure of Rochester Avenue east of 1st Avenue.

The North Dodge outbound route will detour using 1st Avenue to Tudor Drive, to Post Road, to return to regular route on Rochester Avenue. The inbound route will not be affected.

Bus stops located at Rochester and 1st Avenue (#7420) and Rochester and Post Road (#7422) will not be serviced while the closure is in effect.

Normal service is expected to resume effective Monday, June 8, 2020.
