Traffic Alert – Benton Street

Weather permitting, traffic on the following street will be impacted beginning Monday, Oct. 3, 2022:

Benton Street will be closed at its intersection with Giblin Drive. Access to Giblin Drive will be maintained at all times. A detour route including Riverside Drive, Highway 1, and Sunset Street will be posted.

This traffic impact will facilitate work associated with the 2022 Water Pavement Patching Project. It is anticipated normal traffic will resume by the end of the day Friday, Oct. 14.

City receives award for excellence in financial reporting for 37th consecutive year

For the 37th consecutive year, the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the City of Iowa City for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, or Annual Report, for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2021.

The Government Finance Officers Association, or GFOA, awarded the Certificate of Achievement, the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting for “significant accomplishment by a government and its management.”

City switching parking mobile payment app to ParkMobile

The City's Parking Division will be switching its parking mobile payment app to ParkMobile in October. Converted meters will be clearly marked with the ParkMobile logo.

The switch from Passport Parking to ParkMobile comes after the University of Iowa switched to ParkMobile earlier in the year. Soon, all mobile parking payments in town will be handled exclusively through the app.

Iowa Avenue to close for University of Iowa basketball event

The Iowa City Downtown District will host a University of Iowa Men's and Women's basketball event Friday, Sept. 30, 2022. The event will feature a full-sized court set up on Iowa Avenue and games played between 5-6 p.m.

Iowa Avenue will be closed between Clinton and North Dubuque streets starting at 1 p.m., Sept. 30. Iowa Avenue will reopen shortly after the event concludes around 6 p.m.

Signs indicating "No Parking" will be posted Thursday, Sept. 29, and vehicles left in the event area will be towed beginning at noon, Sept. 30.

Bus schedules impacted by City High Homecoming Parade on Sept. 28

Two Iowa City Transit routes, 2- Court Street and 9- Towncrest, will be impacted by the City High Homecoming Parade starting after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022, until the parade ends.

The parade route will begin at Mercer Park, 2701 Bradford Dr., at about 6 p.m., and proceed west on Bradford Drive to First Avenue. The parade will then travel north on First Avenue to Bates Field where it will end.

Buses will wait until the affected streets are no longer blocked by the parade and then resume service. The routes should be running normally before 7 p.m. that same night...

Iowa City Police Department announces new hires, Life Saving Commendations

The Iowa City Police Department welcomed a new officer and recognized two officers for their life-saving efforts during a ceremony Monday, Sept. 26, 2022, at Emma Harvat Hall.

Officer Jordan Schuck is from Fort Madison. Officer Schuck has a bachelor of science degree in law enforcement and justice administration from Western Illinois University and previously served with the Johnson County, Kan., Sheriff's Office. Office Schuck is a certified peace officer in Kansas and will go through the process to be certified in Iowa.

Expect travel delays during City High Homecoming Parade

The City High School Homecoming Parade will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022. The parade route will begin at Mercer Park, 2701 Bradford Dr., and proceed west on Bradford Drive to First Avenue. The parade will then travel north on First Avenue to Bates Field where it will end. Traffic will not be allowed on or across the route once the parade begins. Drivers traveling in the area are encouraged to use an alternate route as delays are expected.
