Iowa City curbside customers can bring natural, unflocked holiday trees to the curb for collection at 7 a.m. on your normal pickup day. Remove all decorations first and do not place your tree in a plastic bag. For more information, visit

Johnson County residents that do not have curbside composting can bring trees to the Iowa City Landfill’s Compost Facility to be composted at no cost. The landfill is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In observance of the holidays, the landfill will be closed Dec. 26, 2022, and Jan. 2, 2023.

Artificial holiday trees can be reused or donated to a local secondhand store, if still usable. If artificial trees are past use, they are considered trash. Iowa City curbside customers can schedule a bulky item pickup to have them collected at the curb or Johnson County residents can transport them directly to the landfill to be disposed of. For more information about the landfill, visit
