“U & I in Community” will be the theme of this year’s Iowa City Area Juneteenth Celebration, set for Saturday, June 24, 2017.
The event celebrates the end of slavery in 1865, and will be held from noon to 6 p.m. at Mercer Park and the Mercer Park Aquatic Center/Scanlon Gym, 2701 Bradford Dr. This year marks the area’s seventh annual celebration.
Activities include historical displays, music and live entertainment by Funk Daddies from 2 to 6 p.m. The Iowa City Human Rights Commission will also present awards for its annual Youth Essay and Art contest. Children are invited to enjoy fun outside with a bouncy house, face painting and games. A health and resource fair will also be offered, providing information on area programs and resources for families.
To kick-off the celebration, on Friday, June 23, 2017, the Trailblazer Awards will be presented from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Radisson Inn & Conference Center in Coralville. Marian Coleman, former Equity Director for the Iowa City Community School District will be the Keynote speaker. The Trailblazer Awards are dedicated to those who are the unsung heroes of our community that stand up for civil rights, promote positive change, and serve to make our world a better place. This year's winners are Kendra Malone, who will receive the the Outstanding Leader Award, and Monique Green, who will receive the Emerging Activist Award. The Transformative Icon Award will honor the Center for Worker Justice.
Juneteenth is hosted by the Johnson County Community Juneteenth Committee. Sponsors include Johnson County Social Services, Johnson County Community Partnership for Protecting Children, the City of Iowa City, Hy-Vee, Veridian Credit Union, Iowa City Police Association, Johnson County Democrats, Underground Printing and other local businesses, nonprofits, and organizations.
