Iowa City’s Office of Equity and Human Rights is pleased to present "The Boys of Baraka" with commentary and discussion by Dr. Stephanie DiPietro. This in-person program will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the East Side Environmental Education Center, 2401 Scott Blvd., SE. The City of Iowa City has launched an $4 million Inclusive Economic Development Program targeting underestimated businesses and entrepreneurs located in Iowa City.

The City is now accepting Statements of Interest within two categories:

Physical Space for multicultural business hubs, business collaboration spaces (shared retail, kitchens, etc.), and youth entrepreneurial and community centers. Work to resume this week on Rochester Avenue Reconstruction Project

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to resume this week on the Rochester Avenue Reconstruction Project.

Construction crews will be on-site performing various activities, beginning with underground pipe work between Rochester Court and Windsor Drive. Traffic control will remain the same with the detour route using Ashwood Drive, Glendale Road/East Jefferson Street, and Parsons Avenue. The Montrose Avenue and Rochester Avenue intersection will be closed once again upon resuming construction.

On Sunday, October 23, 2022, at approximately 1:59 a.m., Iowa City Police responded to the H-Bar, 220 S. Van Buren St., for a report of multiple shots fired in the alley. While en route, reports came in of at least one person shot.

Officers arrived on scene and located an adult male - later identified as Waymond Thomas, 36, of Iowa City - suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Officers rendered emergency medical aid until the Johnson County Ambulance Service arrived on scene and transported Thomas to the hospital for treatment. Thomas died while at the hospital.

Iowa Legal Aid and Shelter House are collaborating to provide a clinic aimed at alleviating the burdens of juvenile and criminal legal involvement. Pre-registration is required.

Large winter storm brings reminder to clear sidewalks of snow

Another round of heavy snow has hit Iowa City. With the snow ending around 10 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2023, residents are reminded that they should clear their sidewalks of snow, slush, and ice.

With enforcement not expected to begin until Monday, March 13, and another snowstorm forecast for this weekend, the City urges residents to stay safe when dealing with this heavy snow. Clearing sidewalks as soon as possible will be the easiest time to do so before snow has a chance to freeze over or get packed down.

Iowa City Fire Department responds to Sunday structure fire

At 4:47 p.m., Sunday, March 5, the Iowa City Fire Department was called to 250 Lexington Ave. for a possible structure fire. A passerby reported smelling smoke and hearing smoke detectors alerting inside the residence.

Crews arrived on scene within five minutes and encountered smoke coming from the roof of the residence. Firefighters entered the home and discovered a small fire contained to the kitchen, as well as heavy smoke throughout the residence. The fire was extinguished within five minutes of crews arriving on scene.
