In honor of the City Park Amusement rides’ final season of operation, Iowa City Parks and Recreation is offering free rides in August (seven days a week) and September (weekends only).
The City Park rides opened in 1952 and were owned and operated by the Drollinger family until 1999, when Guy and Sue Drollinger sold the rides to the City of Iowa City. The City has operated the rides ever since; however, maintaining the aging amusement rides is no longer viable. As such, the rides will close permanently on Sept. 23, at the end of the 2018 season. As an alternative to the rides, the City has planned the addition of a large Adventure playground scheduled for construction in late spring/early summer 2019.
The City Park amusement rides are currently open 1-7 p.m. daily through August 19, 2018. After Aug. 20, rides are open from 1-6 p.m. on weekends only through Sunday, September 23.
