Annual Iowa City water main valve exercise program to resume this month

Beginning in early December 2015, weather permitting, City of Iowa City Water Division staff will resume the annual water main valve exercising program. Valve exercising is part of regular maintenance to verify valves are operational and in good working order.

The program will begin along Mormon Trek Boulevard and move east through the City. When valves are exercised in your area, you may notice rust-colored water in your home or business. To minimize this, staff will also flush fire hydrants. The water is safe, but this discoloration may be a problem if you are washing laundry....

Summer 2015 Senior Center survey results

During the summer of 2015, Linda Wastyn and Associates conducted a series of focus groups and surveys to gauge the interest of Center members in contributing to The Center beyond a Center membership, and to identify areas of pride that could assist in future marketing efforts. The information collected is being used to develop strategic marketing and fundraising plans for 2016 and beyond.

Modest fee increases ahead for Senior Center

In 2014 the Iowa City City Council appointed an Ad Hoc Senior Services Committee to evaluate area senior services – including The Center and its programming – that receive financial support from the City. This request stemmed from the anticipated decrease in City revenue due to statewide property tax law reform. The committee subsequently recommended that The Center diversify its operational funding and decrease its reliance upon the City’s General Fund for support.

For the fifth year in a row, co-workers, colleagues, and friends of the late Linda Severson will carry on her legacy by collecting donations for area nonprofits and charities as part of the Severson Holiday Charity Challenge. Severson, who served as the Human Resources Planning Coordinator for the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC) from 1994 until her death in 2011, coordinated the City of Iowa City’s holiday donation drive each year to help those in need.
