What do you get when you add hands-on activities plus fun-loving kids? Crazy 8s Math Club!

The Iowa City Public Library is joining the national movement to make math the cool thing to do after school by hosting a Crazy 8s Math Club for elementary students in kindergarten through second grade. Beginning March 2, this fun and educational program will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Storytime Room every Wednesday for eight weeks.

City of Iowa City Mayor Jim Throgmorton has committed to the Compact of Mayors, a global coalition of city leaders launched at the 2014 United Nations Climate Summit to address climate change. By participating in the compact, Mayor Throgmorton commits to climate action by taking stock of greenhouse emissions and the current effects of climate change in Iowa City, creating an action plan with clearly defined reduction targets, and implementing a common system of measuring emissions, monitoring climate risks, and tracking the community’s progress with regular reports.

The Iowa City Police Department will host a Coffee with a Cop event from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 at the west side Java House, 713 Mormon Trek Boulevard. Residents are invited to join their neighbors, friends and co-workers to discuss community issues with neighborhood police officers. There’s no agenda scheduled -- this is just a chance to ask questions, voice concerns and get to know police officers in a relaxed setting over a cup of coffee. Road Construction - Bowery Street

Weather permitting, beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 24, Bowery Street will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic near its intersection with Lucas Street. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate repair work on a sanitary sewer line in the area. It is anticipated that Bowery Street will be re-opened to normal traffic by the end of the day on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Motorists are to take note of this construction work and to allow extra travel time as delays may be possible. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling in construction areas.

Road Construction - N Dubuque Street

Weather permitting, beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 24, northbound traffic on N. Dubuque Street will be reduced to one lane from Brown Street to the Mayflower residence hall. The lane reduction will be a moving operation as tree trimming proceeds down the roadway. This work will occur between the hours of 9 a.m and 3 p.m. and is expected to be completed by the end of the day on Thursday, Feb. 25.

Motorists are to take note of this lane reduction and to allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas....

The Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) recognized two officers and one civilian employee for their accomplishments in 2015 at a reception in Emma J. Harvat Hall on Monday, Feb. 22. Matt Wagner received the Civilian Officer of the Year award, Officer Rob Cash received the Richard “Dick” Lee award, and Officer Dave Gonzalez received the Officer of the Year award.

Senior Center to host speed dating event for 60+ Friday, March 11

The Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center will host a speed dating event from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 11 at Devotay, 117 N. Linn Street. There is a $10 fee to participate. Seating is limited, so registration is required. Interested participants can register in advance at the Senior Center, 28 S. Linn Street, or by calling 319-356-5220.

The event is organized specifically for people ages 60 and up. Speed dating is a social event – it is a way to have a good time, meet new people, and learn more about communication.
