Iowa City Fire Department responds to house fire on 3rd Ave.

The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a house fire at 409 3rd Ave, in Iowa City at 11:09 p.m. on February 26th. The first unit arrived on scene four minutes after receiving the alarm and reported a working fire with smoke showing from the eves of the roof.

The occupants of the building had safely exited the structure prior to the fire department’s arrival. Fire crews made a quick interior attack, containing the fire damage to the attic space. The fire was deemed under control within 10 minutes of the fire department’s arrival.

Road Construction - S Gilbert Street

Weather permitting, beginning on Monday, February 29, 2016, northbound traffic on S Gilbert Street will be reduced to one lane between Lafayette Street and Court Street. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate the placement of a fiber optic line in the area and will be a moving operation as the installation proceeds down the roadway. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume by the end of the day on Thursday, March 3rd.

Motorists are to take note of this lane reduction and to allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when...

Road Construction - S Riverside Dr / Highway 1

Weather permitting, beginning on Monday, February 29, 2016, northbound traffic on S Riverside Drive/Highway 1 will be reduced to one lane between Benton Street and overhead railroad bridge. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate repair work on a water service line in the area. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume by the end of the day on Thursday, March 3rd.

New ICPL Services Allows Patrons to Freeze Holds

Just in time for spring break, the Iowa City Public Library has added a new service, Freezing Holds, that will enable patrons to manage their holds.

Library patrons may have 10 free holds at one time, with requests filled on a first come, first serve basis. Holds, or reserves, can be placed on materials checked out to other patrons, or on materials checked in and available, which a staff member will pull and put on the Holds shelf. Patrons are notified when their requested materials are available, and given a six-day window to visit ICPL to check out the items.

A final public open house and input session was held at City Hall for the Riverfront Crossings streetscape plan on Thursday, Feb. 18. The presentation and open house provided another opportunity for the public to review and discuss concepts for improved public sidewalk, landscaping, street trees, lighting, signage, entranceway features and other amenities.
