Instinctively, cats know the benefits of stretching. As humans, we could incorporate more of it into our daily lives. The Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center is teaming up with Jazzercise Iowa City Fitness Center to offer a special mat-based stretching class -- Cats & Mats -- on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016 at 4 p.m. The class will be held at the Jazzercise Iowa City Fitness Center, 1010 S. Gilbert Street.

The Iowa City Public Library’s online catalog and digital collections will be unavailable Wednesday, Aug. 17. This includes eBooks and digital audiobooks through OverDrive, digital magazines through Zinio, and research databases.

The interruption in service is due to a scheduled maintenance to the Library’s server. We apologize for the inconvenience, and will work quickly to make the catalog and digital collections available to the public as soon as possible.

City of Iowa City Finance Director Dennis Bockenstedt has been notified that for the fifth consecutive year, the City’s Finance Department has been awarded the national Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). Portion of Dodge Street to close immediately for tree removal

Crews will be removing a tree that has cracked and split in the 300 block of Dodge Street. To allow for work, Dodge Street will close between Davenport and Bloomington Streets, beginning at 9 a.m. today, Aug. 16, 2016.

Traffic will detour west onto Church Street to Dubuque Street to Market Street, and then back to Dodge Street. The closure is expected to last approximately 4 to 5 hours. Normal traffic should resume around mid-afternoon.

Drivers should be aware of this closure and take an alternate route. As always, use caution when driving through a construction area....

Dubuque Street will not temporarily close twice daily for underground rock splitting work this week, Mon. Aug. 15 - Fri. Aug. 19.

Crews had anticipated the need to close at approximately 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Monday - Friday through at least Aug. 23, but will not do so this week.

Rummage in the Ramp diverts 27 tons of household goods from Landfill

After its 10th year, Rummage in the Ramp continues to prove its popularity in Iowa City, diverting roughly 27 tons of household goods from the Landfill during the 12-day event. Launched as an effort to reduce the volume of still-usable goods taken to the Landfill following the traditional college student move-out cycle, this recycle-and-reuse event also raised $19,000 for local nonprofits this year. Sale proceeds were split by the local agencies and student organizations that helped staff the event.

Construction of the First Avenue Grade Separation Project, which elevates the railroad crossing and lowers the road, is progressing and will require the closure of First Avenue beginning Saturday, August 20, 2016.

The closure will impact First Avenue, south of Bradford Drive through Mall Drive, which will be closed to thru traffic and is necessary for crews to remove the temporary road and begin paving under the new railroad bridge.
