Work on Irving Avenue to close portion of road, detour Westside Hospital route

Irving Avenue will close to traffic west of Emily Court beginning Tues. Sept. 6, 2016, weather permitting. The closure is needed for pavement repair in the area.

People will be able to access their homes during the closure.

During the work, the Westside Hospital route will not travel on Coll Drive, Jensen Street, Irving Avenue or Shannon Drive. The bus stops located at Coll Drive & Coll Court (stop 8332), Jensen Street and Jensen Court (stop 8333), and Irving Avenue and Shannon Drive (stop 8334) will be closed while the project is ongoing.

First Avenue to Reopen Saturday, Sept. 3

First Avenue will reopen Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016 at 8 a.m. following a two week closure.

The road will reopen allowing one lane of traffic in each direction.

First Avenue closed two weeks ago to allow for the removal of the temporary road and to pave new lanes under the raised railroad bridge. The work is part of the First Avenue Grade Separation Project , which will elevate the railroad crossing and lower the road, helping to eliminate long train delays.

City staff provided an update on the Washington Streetscape Project on, Friday, Sept. 2, 2016 at Bo-James in Downtown Iowa City.

Last week, crews installed a new traffic signal at the intersection of Washington and Clinton streets. Conduit was installed for electric and telecommunications, irrigation for planters was completed, and sidewalk paving along with planter installation continues within the 100 block of Washington Street. Additionally, paving of the west half of the Washington and Dubuque Street Intersection was completed.

Johnson County Conservation will spend a Sunday afternoon tagging Monarch butterflies before they head south for the winter.

Outbound Oakcrest and Night/Weekend Oakcrest will detour due to construction on Oakcrest Street between Sunset Street and George Street, beginning Tuesday, September 6, 2016.

The closure is expected to last until approximately Monday, September 19, 2016. These routes will bypass the work zone by detouring via Koser Avenue from Melrose Avenue to George Street and then resume service on Oakcrest Street.
