Statement from the Iowa City Mayor on proposed state collective bargaining changes

One of Iowa City’s legislative priorities this year is "Protection of public sector employee collective bargaining rights." Our City Council and staff knew the Republican majorities in the House and Senate would make some changes to the basic law governing collective bargaining (Chapter 20), but we (or at least I) did not anticipate how extensively and quickly they would eviscerate it.

The conference called "Advancing Racial Equity: the role of Government - Iowa" will focus on racial equity and provide tools for awareness, education and best practices. Iowa City Police officers are requesting the public's help as they continue to investigate a strong armed robbery.

Just before 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, police received a report of a strong armed robbery that happened at about 11:15 p.m. The victim told officers two men approached him while he was walking in the alleyway behind New Pioneer Food Co-op, located at 22 S. Van Buren Street. The victim said one of the men then assaulted him and both men demanded his phone and wallet. The men ran away with an undisclosed amount of cash and property. Iowa City Police arrested a man accused of shooting and injuring another man early Sunday Feb. 12, 2017.

Just after 2:30 a.m., officers responded to the area of Wayne Avenue and Baker Street for a report of shots fired and an individual leaving the scene following a vehicle collision. Police arrived, search the area and found the suspect. Officers also learned a victim was shot in the arm, left the scene of the shooting and later arrived at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with non-life threatening injuries.

City of Iowa City drinking water safe to drink

The University of Iowa notified its campus consumers that it has received notice that its water system had violated a drinking water standard. City of Iowa City Water is not experiencing the same issue as the University supply.

In 2003, the City of Iowa City began treating its water in a state-of-the-art multi-source water purification facility. That facility provides the best water quality possible for Iowa City and University Heights residents. Iowa City's rolling (TTHM) average for 2016 was well below the Safe Drinking Water Standard at 32.9 parts per billion.

Firefighters respond to house fire

Iowa City Firefighters responded to a house fire on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017.

Fire crews were dispatched just after 9 p.m. to 60 Arbury Drive where they found heavy smoke coming from a basement window and quickly determined all occupants were out of the home. Firefighters then located the fire in the basement and searched the home to be sure everyone made it out safely.

The home took on approximately $10,000 in damage. The cause remains under investigation.

Iowa City Police are investigating a shooting that happened Monday, Feb. 6, 2017.

Officers responded to the 2600 block of Bartelt Road, just before 5:30 p.m., for a report of shots fired and a person on the ground. As officers were responding, the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center received a call that a gunshot victim had arrived at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics Emergency Room.
