Public art matching grants renewed for 2017; first round of proposals due in January

The City of Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) has once again funded its Matching Grant Project, announcing that it will provide up to $2,000 in matching funds for public art projects in 2017. The first deadline for proposals is in January.

Funded through the Iowa City Public Art Program, the Matching Grant Project will consider visual, audio, or performance-based art such as sculpture, murals, performances, readings, interactive exhibits, video projections, soundscapes, spoken word, and other mediums. Senior Center temporarily without elevator service

Senior Center staff is advising members and guests that the building’s elevator system is currently out of service. Elevator maintenance staff is working to correct the problem; however, it is anticipated the elevator will not be available until next Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016. The Senior Center is located at 28. S. Linn Street in Downtown Iowa City.

Center staff apologizes for the inconvenience, but notes that there are other ways to access various levels of the building without using the stairs.

Threatening letter posted at Iowa City residence; Police seek public’s assistance

On November 12, 2016, at approximately 12:42 a.m. the Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) was dispatched to a residence on Prairie Du Chien Road to a report of a harassing letter. This matter was referred to the ICPD Investigations division. Upon the ICPD Investigator meeting with the victim, it was reported that the victim left the residence around midnight and returned at approximately 12:40 a.m. to find a letter containing a racial and threatening message taped to his front door. There were no reported witnesses to this event and there are no suspects at this time.

Over the past week, a number of intimidating acts have been directed toward definable groups of Iowa Citians. Monday’s incident involving an intimidating message being posted on the door of a Sudanese family exemplifies the point. As a result of this and related acts, many residents are feeling increasingly fearful and threatened.

City of Iowa City issues Thanksgiving holiday schedule

City of Iowa City administrative offices at City Hall and other facilities will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25, 2016 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Other closures or adjustments to schedules for the holiday are as follows:

Airport: The administration office will be closed Thursday and Friday for the holidays. Jet Air will be available Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday, will be open regular hours.
