Hazardous waste collection event scheduled Friday at ESRC

The Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center will sponsor a mobile household hazardous waste collection event this Friday, Nov. 18, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE in Iowa City. There is no cost to participate.

Residents of Iowa City and other communities in rural areas of Johnson County, as well as residents of Kalona and Riverside, may dispose of one box of hazardous waste per household, including oil-based paint, household cleaners, non-alkaline batteries such as rechargeable or cell phone batteries, sharps, motor oil and other...

On Tuesday, November 14, 2016 at approximately 8:10 p.m. Iowa City Police responded to the 600 block of S. Gilbert St. for a report of an armed robbery. According to the adult female victim, she was in the parking lot of 625 S. Gilbert St. when a tan minivan pulled into the lot and a man jumped out of the driver’s side sliding door and approached her. The man pointed a black hand gun toward her direction and told her to give him her money. When she responded that she had no money the man jumped back into the van and the van sped out of the parking lot in an unknown direction.

Police, Fire Departments close N. 1st Avenue for gas leak

UPDATE: Repairs did not take as long as originally anticipated, and have been completed. The street has been reopened.

City of Iowa City Police and Fire Department crews are closing portions of N. 1st Avenue in Iowa City due to an underground gas line leak caused when construction equipment hit the gas line. MidAmerican Energy is also on its way to the scene. The incident occurred in the 800 block of N. 1st Avenue.

The street is expected to be closed until about 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016. It will reopen when repairs are completed and it is safe to...

The fifth City Council listening post will be held in the lobby of the Senior Center, 28 South Linn Street, on Tuesday, November 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dubuque Street on game day: Expect delays, traffic changes

Hawkeye football fans who are headed to Iowa City for the game this weekend are reminded that there may be some traffic delays on Dubuque Street due to ongoing construction on the Iowa City Gateway Project. Drivers are encouraged to arrive early or use an alternate route to Kinnick Stadium to avoid delays. The Hawkeyes face the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, beginning at 7 p.m.
